Call for Volunteers: Desk Reference Manual Update Task Force

This year, the Board identified a critical need to update the Desk Reference Manual—an essential resource that supports our profession. With 47 chapters and content now over six years old, this effort goes beyond a simple refresh. It’s an opportunity to modernize, enhance accuracy, expand content, and explore more efficient ways to keep the material current moving forward.

To support this initiative, a dedicated task force has been established, consisting of seven teams organized by subject matter expertise. Each team will receive pre-researched recommendations to review, validate sources, refine content, and ensure relevance. An AHMP Board Member will lead each group, providing guidance, access to resources, and support in removing any barriers to progress.

The goal is ambitious: to complete updates to all 47 chapters and accompanying EHMM Modules by the end of 2026, with a stretch goal of October 1, 2026—just in time for the EHS HazMat Summit.

Volunteers who participate in this effort will receive:

  • Recognition as an editor for the associated chapter(s)
  • Eligibility to count their time toward CEU contact hours
  • A complimentary PDF copy of the finished Desk Reference (for those actively contributing to at least five chapter updates)

And perhaps most importantly, this is a meaningful way to give back—supporting the next generation of CHMMs by strengthening a resource that has long served our community.

Volunteers are welcome for all teams, but especially needed in the areas of Emergency Preparedness, Disaster Recovery, Homeland Security, HAZWOPER, Environmental Regulations & Policy, and Pollution Prevention. If you’re interested in joining a team, please contact Jennifer Koenig at [email protected] or call (812) 945-1541.
