No wonder then that he loved AHMP. Those three things are at the core of the mission of this organization.
After a lot of discussion with the AHMP Board and other leaders, we’ve asked the Awards committee to develop a special recognition to be named in honor of Rich’s life and contribution to AHMP. Its actual name and criteria for issuing it are yet to be determined. But there’s been some speculation that, whatever its formal name, it will probably come to be known simply as “The Cartwright”.
Finally, on the topic of both networking and learning, registration is now open for the 2025 AHMP Hazmat Summit, September 9-11 in Louisville, KY. Even without Cartwright, this year’s program is gearing up to be one of the best ever. I look forward to seeing many of you there where we hope to continue to live up to the Cartwright legacy.
Paul Hausman AHMP Executive Committee Chair
In Memory: Richard Cartwright
The industry suffered a huge loss in April with the passing of Richard Cartwright. Rich was one of AHMP’s founding fathers, a past AHMP President, a Pete Cook awardee, and a fellow of the IHMM. He was the first ever AHMP Ambassador and founded AHMP's LinkedIn presence.
Rich passed away unexpectedly on April 21, 2025 at the age of 78. With a career spanning over five decades, Rich was a legend in the Environmental, Health & Safety, and Hazardous Materials Management industry. To those he worked with, he was more than just a colleague. He was a connector, a mentor, a champion of shared knowledge, and a tireless advocate for environmental health, safety, and responsibility. He was a firm believer in building meaningful connections and communities using his passion for collaboration and education to empower others and spark positive change. His passion for mentorship inspired hundreds if not thousands, and his encouragement left an indelible mark on generations of environmental professionals.
Above all, Rich adored his family. He is survived by his wife Phyllis (Russell); daughter Erin and son-in-law Michael; son Bryan and daughter-in-law Christina; and four beautiful granddaughters: Alanda, Kiellian, Elayne, and Eryca. He is also survived by two sisters: Brenda, and Carol; one brother, Alan; and predeceased by his parents, Eric James and Edith Estelle (Zuber).
Rich had a larger-than-life personality that was impossible to miss, and even harder to forget. He left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on in the family he cherished, the countless friends and colleagues he supported, and the many lives he touched with his wisdom, humor, and generous heart.
The family is planning a Celebration of Life in June. More information and details for the event will be shared soon.

Webinar: Inspection Requirements for Fire Water Tanks
Tuesday, May 20, 2025 3:00 AM - 4:00 PM EDT
If your municipal water supply lacks the required pressure for fire protection, your insurance company may require installation of a fire pump and water storage tank. Insurance companies and local fire departments require maintenance and periodic inspections of the tanks. In this presentation, TTI Environmental staff will break down the guidelines and regulations that apply to firewater systems and how to conform to the requirements. We’ll also discuss inspection methods, including those that do not require taking the tanks out of service. Performing inspections reduces risk, may save on insurance premiums, and helps avoid fire department violations and fines.
Speaker: Patricia B Stock, TTI Environmental
Ms. Stock currently manages TTI’s aboveground storage tank inspectors and technicians, along with their support staff. She provides technical expertise with pressure vessel calculations and standards interpretation related to mechanical integrity. She provides regulatory assistance to clients related to release prevention techniques and asset management to achieve compliance. She is an expert in EHS management and compliance with 30 years of experience. Ms. Stock clients are from academic, federal, municipal, and industry sectors.
