Message from the Board of Directors

In my final message to you, our members, I want to reflect back on 6 years of Board service.

Always surround yourself with people who are even more talented and competent than you. – Steven Covey

Through two years as Secretary, three as treasurer and my final year as Chair, I have been continually impressed by the skill, diligence and professionalism of our Board members and leaders across AHMP committees. It’s been an honor to serve alongside all of them.

In This Issue:
  • Message from the Board of Directors
  • Membership Renewal
  • December Webinar
  • Cyber Chapter EHMM Course
  • Toxicology Mini-Conference
  • 2026 EHS HAZMAT Summit
  • AHMP Scholarship Fund
  • AHMP Online Store
  • IHMM News

In the Fall of 2019, I agreed to stand for election to the AHMP Board. A 2018 survey of members showed AHMP to have an aging demographic. I was determined to help make us more relevant to the hazmat professional in her or his 40s, 30s, or even 20s. That was to be my laser focus!

To make the fates laugh tell them you have a plan. – anon.

Then 2020 hit us. COVID shut down all face-to-face activity. We quickly negotiated postponement of hotel contracts and learned how to create a virtual conference. As COVID restrictions lifted we went through not one, not two, but three successive changes in administrative support staff. With each successive change your Board and AHMP committees acted smartly and decisively. While we took a pretty heavy financial hit, we remained active in serving our members’ needs for professional development and networking.

Serenity is not freedom from the storm, but peace amid the storm. – cheap inspirational poster

Through the chaos years we did make progress. As just a few examples,

  • We’ve increased our social media engagements considerably.
  • We’ve begun to build member discount agreements.
  • We’ve been offering more webinars on broader and more current topics and have plans to continue to grow those offerings.
  • We established a discounted membership for “emerging professionals” in their first years in the profession.
  • We’ve steadily grown our cooperation with the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management to the benefit of both our organizations, Institute certificants, and our members.

Moving into 2026 the Board has plans to accelerate this progress.

After two years of relative stability, we’re on solid financial footing and prepared to move into the future. In 2024 we ended nearly two decades of membership decline and in 2025 we saw notable growth from 803 to 840 members.

I wish we could have accomplished more, sooner. But we’re in a good place and I’m excited for the future of the Alliance. I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to all of the past, current and incoming leaders alongside of whom I’ve had the pleasure to serve and to the membership as a whole for allowing me the honor of being part of the AHMP leadership team!

Wishing you all a happy and healthy holiday season and an amazing 2026!

Paul Hausman, CHMM
Chair, Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals, Inc.
