Emergency Response Scenario

  • Wednesday, August 29
  • 7:30 am–11:30 am
  • There is a fee of $25 to participate in the ERS.

Location: Virginia City, Nevada

We take for granted the number of products in our daily lives that require earth minerals and the mining necessary to make these products a reality.

Nevada, known as the “Silver State,” is one of the top mining states in the United States. In fact, it is the fourth largest gold producer in the world, behind only South Africa, Australia, and China! Mining remains an integral part of the Nevada economy. And mining, like so many activities, involves the use of hazardous materials.

This year’s scenario involves the release of a cyanide solution in a mine (Portal) shaft, resulting in a hazmat response that requires medical attention. In the scenario, the solution is inadvertently taken down into the mine instead of the intended product. The container fails, resulting in the release of the solution and the subsequent off-gassing of vapors.

AHMP thanks the Nevada Mining Association and the Nevada Mine Rescue Association teams for working with us to provide this year’s scenario. The teams will demonstrate some of the unique challenges that a complex environment like an underground mining response poses for responders. The teams will also demonstrate some cutting-edge technology in terms of equipment and gear.

This year’s ERS truly is a unique setting and situation!

Note to tour participants: The tour location is not handicap accessible. You must wear closed-toe shoes and long pants. Short-sleeve shirts are recommended (but no tank tops). The area could be muddy, so wearing clothes that you don't mind getting dirty is suggested. The ERS site should be somewhat shaded, but it also could be quite windy, so a cap or hat is a good idea. Finally, there might be limits on how many participants can actually tour the mine (though video monitors will show what is taking place in the mine during the scenario operation).
