Shared Databases Could Deter Nuclear Threat
Toronto Globe & Mail © 2008 Information, Inc.
A panel of 70 experts from Europe, Israel and the United States agree that international databases need to be created to share information about nuclear and radioactive materials.
A report released by the experts proposed a two-step process which includes the databases and a system that makes it easier to detect nuclear and radioactive materials during transport. These databases would make it simpler to track and determine the origin of any smuggled nuclear material.
The experts believe that these databases could serve as a deterrent if nuclear arms dealers were aware that they could be caught easier. Countries that have either a nuclear weapons program or nuclear power facilities would have to provide information on the types of nuclear materials used, allowing for the source of nuclear material to be easily traced.
Although it would require many countries sharing classified military information, the experts believe that the benefits of removing nuclear threats would make it worthwhile.

Where Gadgets Go to Die
Toronto Globe & Mail © 2008 Information, Inc.
Hewlett-Packard (HP) has started an education campaign to encourage people to return old products, and also offers free recycling.
HP's recycling partner is Sims Recycling Solutions, which guarantees that it will never ship any electronic device overseas, nor will its subcontractors.
Sims executive Cindy Coutts says the company developed its recycling technology as part of a mining operation when it discovered that recycling is very similar to mining. She says the Sims facility in Brampton, Ontario, processes 1.5 million pounds of discarded electronics per month.
The plant has a maximum throughput of 10,000 pounds per hour. At the plant, all recyclables arrive on pallets, are weighed, and each individual item receives a bar code that is scanned at each stage of the process so the company can issue a certificate of destruction if the owner requires one, as is the case for some corporations and government agencies.
The first step is manual, with workers removing toner, ink, light bulbs, batteries and other materials from the equipment. Monitor glass, which contains lead, is also removed. From there, all items are virtually untouched by people, with boxes being moved by forklift to a conveyor belt, which leads to a series of shredders that cut the shells into progressively smaller pieces.

A Message from ACHMM
Michael J. Mandracchia, CHMM
ACHMM President
The Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers' (ACHMM) long-held vision is to be “the recognized leader and resource for those practicing environmental, health and safety management.”
I believe we are that “recognized leader”, but we must prepare for the future.
To ensure the organization’s position as the preeminent membership group in the environmental, health, safety and security (EHS&S) industry, the ACHMM Board of Directors has appointed a Branding Task Group to evaluate ACHMM’s current brand identity and to recommend a possible new organization name that is inclusive of all professionals in the EHS&S community.
The potential new name would position ACHMM as a membership organization for industry professionals who have earned the Certified Hazardous Materials Manager® (CHMM®) designation and other EHS&S-related credentials.
The task group is headed by past president John H. Mitchell, CHMM and is comprised of current and former national and chapter leaders. This group is working with Communications Resources, LLC, our marketing and communications firm, to explore the possibility of rebranding the organization.
The ultimate goals of this possible name change will be to ensure ACHMM’s long-term viability within the constantly changing EHS&S marketplace, expand its membership base and member benefit offerings, and strengthen its ability to recruit and retain members.
We periodically will update you about the Branding Task Group’s work as it progresses. If you have any questions, please contact ACHMM Executive Director Cedric Calhoun, CAE at (800) 437-0137 or at ccalhoun@achmm.org.

ACHMM's Calhoun Named ASAE Fellow
A. Cedric Calhoun, CAE, ACHMM's executive director, was named to the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) & The Center for Association Leadership's 2008 Class of Fellows.
The prestigious ASAE Fellows program recognizes individual accomplishments and contributions to ASAE & The Center as well as the association community. It also serves as a call to service for association executive professionals.
"ACHMM's leadership and members are proud that Cedric is being honored by ASAE's 2008 Fellows Program," said ACHMM President Michael J. Mandracchia, CHMM. "Cedric is a tremendous leader for ACHMM and is expanding his experience within the association community as well as the environmental, health, safety and security (EHS&S) industry."
As an ASAE Fellow, Calhoun joins an elite list of just 210 association professionals to have received this prestigious honor since the program's inception in 1986. Fellows serve as role models and ambassadors in the association community by seeking out opportunities to serve on boards and committees and by participating as speakers, authors, reviewers and mentors.
Calhoun joined ACHMM in January 2007. In just 15 months he has successfully led a multi-faceted plan that has expanded ACHMM's membership, further developed its programs and services offerings and created greater awareness of ACHMM and its members in the EHS&S industry, government and academia.

Get Involved in CHMMunity® Today
With Earth Day (April 21) less than a month away, ACHMM is reminding its chapters and members about the CHMMunity® Outreach Program—a national community service initiative that helps EHS&S professionals encourage proactive management of hazardous materials in their communities and promotes the industry to the public.
CHMMunity establishes a structure for ACHMM chapters and individual members to find and work on clean-up or educational projects in their communities. Using ACHMM guidelines, chapters and members across the country can select a deserving cause for their CHMMunity project. For a project to be considered it must have a hazardous materials component and be inadequately funded. Although there are many worthwhile causes, CHMMunity directs ACHMM members' efforts to where their expertise and knowledge will make the most difference.
After selecting a project, each chapter or individual must secure approval from ACHMM. To fund their local program, chapters can solicit donations from local corporations, hold fundraisers, obtain donated services or apply for a CHMMunity grant—worth up to $500 per quarter—from ACHMM.
For more information, download the CHMMunity brochure or the CHMMunity grant application from the ACHMM Web site.
