Destination: Alaska!

Come September 2012, all planes, trains and automobiles will lead to Anchorage, Alaska for the AHMP 2012 National Conference! The AHMP Board of Directors agreed that hosting our 25th Anniversary conference - the 2012 National Conference in Anchorage, AK was a great idea based on overall cost to attend and our ability to showcase a location that is one of the most environmentally sound locations in the world not to mention natural beauty and sight-seeing opportunities.

With that said, there have been questions about the cost of travel to Anchorage. After a thorough analysis of airline ticket prices to Anchorage from many major international airports, it was found that the average ticket price was only $640. That is comparable to traveling to many destinations in the US as well as coast-to-coast travel in the US. You will find the results of our analysis below.

While the airfare costs are comparable from many airports in the US it is important to note that your savings will come from there being no sales tax in Anchorage. Here is a real life example of an AHMP member from Albany, New York. He contacted the AHMP National Office and was concerned about travel costs to Anchorage so we conducted a quick analysis for his situation and this is the email that was sent:

We conducted a number of cost comparisons between Anchorage and Seattle, WA since Seattle was an option for the conference. It is actually less expensive to attend a meeting in Alaska than it is in Seattle over the same dates of our conference (Sept 8-13, 2012) by over $200 per individual (compared airfare and hotel). We ran the same comparison today and had you flying out of Albany based on your Oneonta, NY address. The average airfare from Albany was $665 to Anchorage and $546 to Seattle. The average hotel room with a hotel tax of 15% at the Anchorage Hilton totaled $182.85 per night ($914.25 for 5 nights-AK does not have sales tax and AHMP has a negotiated rate of $159/night). The average hotel room with sales tax of 8% and hotel taxes of 15% in Seattle totaled $260 per night ($1,300 for 5 nights – room rate of $209/night). So, your average total travel to Anchorage would run approximately $1,579.25 and your average total travel to Seattle would run approximately $1,846. The conference in Anchorage would cost $226.75 less than a trip to Seattle.

Dollar for dollar you are going to gain more value out of your conference experience in Anchorage than in Seattle. We look forward to seeing you in Anchorage in September!
