NATIONAL HAZARDOUS MATERIALS LEADERS DONATE TIME, RESOURCES AND EXPERTISE TO HELP CLEAN-UP AUSTIN GREENWAY
Montopolis Greenbelt benefits from inaugural Alliance of Hazardous Materials ProfessionalsTM (AHMP) Community Service Project
Austin, Texas – (Aug. 17, 2011) – Through a partnership with the Montopolis Tributary Trail Association, national leaders from the Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals (AHMP) will donate time, resources and expertise to a clean-up project of the Montopolis Greenbelt on Aug. 27 from 8 a.m. until noon.
The Montopolis Greenbelt represents 40 acres of undeveloped land rich with animal and plant life that is being transformed into a public recreational area. The Montopolis Tributary Trail Association is the group of community volunteers that creates hiking, biking and nature trails and cleans up the water and land of the Montopolis Greenbelt.
The “best of the best” hazardous materials professionals from around the country will work alongside volunteers, including local college students interested in the hazardous materials profession, to remove trash and invasive species from the Montopolis Greenbelt. Hazardous materials professionals will also gather and analyze data on the quality of soil in the creek and pond hoping to provide recommendations on further clean-up options.
These hazardous materials leaders will be in Austin for the AHMP 2011 National Conference held Aug. 28-31 at the Hilton Austin.
“We felt it was important to give back to the community that is graciously hosting us during our annual conference,” said Cedric Calhoun, executive director of AHMP. “We want to provide expertise on Austin’s environmental issues, while passing along industry knowledge to community members and future professionals. We are also donating $2,000 to continue the efforts of the Montopolis Tributary Trail Association after we leave.”
The partnership with Montopolis Tributary Trail Association marks AHMP’s first annual Community Service Project, which will be hosted each year during AHMP’s annual conference. The project is part of AHMP’s CHMMunity Program, a national community service initiative to encourage Certified Hazardous Materials Managers to promote environmental, health and safety and proactive management of hazardous materials in their communities.
Community members are invited to attend the clean-up event and can register at http://www.ahmpnet.org/austin2011.
