Spangler And Gordon Appointed To AHMP Board

Bethesda, MD (Jan. 23, 2009)— Lorenz “Richie” Spangler, CHMM, manager of the shipping and packaging department at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M., and Michael Gordon, CHMM, a project manager for CACI International in Chesapeake, Va., have been appointed to at-large director seats on the 2009 Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals™ (AHMP) Board of Directors.

Formerly the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers, AHMP is an international membership association that fosters the professional development of its members through educational programs, peer group interaction and recognition of the Certified Hazardous Materials Managers® (CHMM®) and other credentials as standards of excellence in the environmental, health, safety and security industry (EHS&S). AHMP is comprised of more than 56 chapters in 37 states and more than 4,000 hazardous materials professionals throughout the world.

Spangler and Gordon assume the seats of Zehra Schneider Graham, CHMM, who was elected AHMP president-elect last fall, and Carol J. Carollo, CHMM, who resigned her seat to focus on personal commitments. “We are saddened that Carol must leave the Board. She contributed greatly to our efforts in guiding AHMP to continued success. We are confident Richie and Mike will continue this tradition of excellence,” said AHMP President Harry S. Kemp, CHMM.

“I am extremely honored and excited to serve my fellow AHMP members,” said Spangler. “I will work with the other members of the Board to develop new programs and services that will help advance the careers of hazardous materials management professionals worldwide and to help establish a course for the organization’s long-term future.”

Spangler has been heavily involved at the local and national levels of AHMP. He is the immediate past president of the organization’s Roadrunner Chapter in Albuquerque, N.M. Before that he was its secretary from 2003 to 2005. At the national level he is a past member of the Professional Development Technical Subcommittee and the National Conference Technical Subcommittee; a former chairman of the Leadership Workshop; and served as a member of the International Task Group. Spangler has more than 19 years hazardous, radioactive and mixed-waste management and environmental remediation experience.

Gordon earned his CHMM certification in 1986. He is a charter member of the Old Dominion Chapter of the ACHMM and serves on the organization’s Board of Directors. He currently is the chapter’s immediate past president and education director. At the national level he served on the Management Systems Technical Subcommittee and as chair of the Membership Technical Subcommittees and currently is a member of the latter. Gordon was integrally involved with the Branding Task Group and served as the chair of the subcommittee that addressed membership issues related to the association’s name change to the Alliance of Hazardous Materials Professionals, which was implemented earlier this year.

“It is an honor and a privilege to serve my fellow AHMP members”, said Gordon. “I believe AHMP members should expect their association to provide them relevant benefits. While on the Board I will work diligently to ensure that AHMP membership is a value proposition for its members and an attractive membership option for all hazardous materials professionals.”

The 2009 AHMP Board of Directors will comprise an Executive Committee of Kemp (Jackson, Tenn.), president; Schneider Graham (Boston, Mass.), vice president/president-elect; Elise Allen-Frankenfield, CHMM (Cleveland, Ohio), secretary; W. Scott Butterfield, CHMM (Trenton, N.J.), treasurer; and Michael Mandracchia, CHMM (Trenton, N.J.), immediate past president.
